Motorcycle Repair: Ape Hanger Installation, ape hangers, clutch cable

Question
I own a 2004 Dyna Wide Glide.  I have a set of ape hangers that are 12.5 in height as compared with the stock 10 in.  I understand that I will most likely have to obtain longer throttle and brake cables, my question is referance the electronic wiring for the controls.  In all that I have read on this I have not found anything ref the wiring.  Do you believe that I will need to get extensions?  If not do I need to take the tank off to get the "excess" of the wiring harness.
Also the bars are routed for internal wiring, any technics you could pass on how to pass the wires thru the bars would be appreciated

thanks

Answer
Your wiring connectors will be located under the tank, so yes you will have to remove it.
First thing you need to do is remove the tank. Next unplug the connector. To run the wires through the handlebars you will have to remove the connector, which takes a special too. You can get the tool at a dealer. Before removing the connector, draw a diagram of where the wires go in the connector. Once you have the connector removed from both sides, remove the controls from the old handlebars and install the new ones. Now your going to have to feed the wires through the handlebars. i usually wrap tape around the ends of the wire bundle and add a piece of hard wire. I then feed the hard wire through and use it to pull the wires through. Once you have the wires through then you can check to see if you need an extention or not.
Remember, you will have to change the throttle cable, idle cable, brake line and clutch cable to longer ones.
Good luck
