Motorcycle Repair: Front Fork Seals, honda shadow vlx, mechanical aptitude

Question
1997 Honda Shadow VLX / DLX 600cc
The question I have involves the replacement of the seals for the front forks. I never have had the oppurtunity to take a set of forks apart. And this leads to the question of how the forks come apart. If I had an exploded view with descriptions this would be of a great benefit.
The bike is a daily rider, weather permitting (rain).
The seals were replaced by a private shop and have lasted around four years. One is weeping bad and the other shows a wet lip on the outer seal. Is this about a normal span?
Should I be looking at the bushings?
Living in Houston and riding year round what vis. of oil would be best to put back in?
I have a very good mechanical aptitude and currently work as a factory tech for the line of gas compressors that we manufacture.
Any info would be great.

Thanks,
Steve

Q:  "...The seals were replaced by a private shop and have lasted around four years. One is weeping bad and the other shows a wet lip on the outer seal. Is this about a normal span?"

A:  Seal may last many years. It depends upon the surfaces they contact. Fork tubes are likely knicked, pitted, rusted, or other defects are causing defects to the seals. Prep the tubes with 3M discs or 600 Wet/Dry sanding paper and replace seals.

Q:  Should I be looking at the bushings?

A:  Unlikely unless damaged or worn beyond service limits.

Q:  Living in Houston and riding year round what vis. of oil would be best to put back in?

A:  Fork Oil? use different weight oils to tune suspension. If you're referring to engine oil, use the appropriate weight oil for your climate's temperatures. 10W40 and 10W30 works well for most United States temperatures. Check the temp chart on oil lables at the auto parts stores.
