Motorcycle Repair: Battery discharging, ac volts, voltage reg

Question
I have a 1991 softail custom FXSTC, the problem I am having is-the battery is discharging while I am riding, I put a new stator in about 4 years ago. I just switched the voltage reg., and is still doing the same thing. Do you think the stator may be bad already?. The battery at full charge reads 12.2 volts. Is there a way to test the stator?

Answer
Yes, you can test the stator. First, you need to make sure you have a good battery. The 12.2 is a little low after charging. Have the battery tested.
If the battery is good then you need to test the stator. You will need a OHM meter and a AC volt meter for the test. Unplug the regulator from the stator. At the stator pins first check for ground at each pin with the OHM meter. If there is a ground the stator needs replaced. Next, start the bike and with the AC volt meter check the AC volts coming out of the stator. At 2000 RPMs you should be getting around 60 volts. If not then the stator is bad. If the stator passes both tests then the regulator is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
