Motorcycle Repair: 1986 honda magna, honda magna, check fuel

Question
I own a 1986 Honda Magna which I bought new in 1989. The break in oil was originally changed with Spectro 4 synthetic oil after the first couple of years. I have driven the bike only a couple hundred miles a year until this year of which I have driven at least 2000 miles. The problem is a great deal of backfiring upon downshifting, loss of power, poor running unless the choke is on partially and occassional white smoke from the muffler pipe by the manifold when I shut the bike off. I realize the bike needs a tune up and oil change. Do you think the carbs need cleaning as well? Anything else recommended? Thanks for your time and advise. CJT.

Answer
Hi Chris,

I suspect the fuel in the carburetors has varnished. The entire fuel system should be inspected. Clean and repair affected parts. Check fuel tank for evidence of rust.

Consider having the tune-up done soon.
