Motorcycle Repair: carburator slide, honda trx 125, accelerator cable

Question
87 HONDA TRX 125 FOURTRAX. The ATV has been sitting for a couple of years and the carburator has a lot of varnish and I can't get the carburator slide out.I can't get the accelerator cable off so I positioned the carburator so it would hold carburator cleaner overnight but this hasn't freed the slide. Is there any secrets to getting the slide free?

Answer
Hi Roger,

If spraying and soaking with carburetor cleaner and lubes as described has failed, try carefully tapping the exterior carb body (slide tower) with a plastic ended mallet in attempt to break the bond.

You can try a heat gun to soften the varnish bond. First eliminate the potential for flashover and fire.

If all of the above fails, consider having a local tech or machine shop inspect the problem.

It's also possible that the throttle side is corroded or seized.

Please let me know what works.

Respectfully,
