Motorcycle Repair: 1980 honda gl1100, honda gl, starter solenoid

Question
i just got my first bike, its a 1980 honda gl 1100, goldwing. i am used to working on cars and trucks, but this thing has me scratching my head. it has a new starter on it, i have the reciept where the old owner bought it. the selinoid, will click but thats all it will do, it will not turn over at all. the battery is charged and hot. on a car you can jump across at the selinoid and get one to turn over, but that doesnt do anything on this, can you give me any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. thank you for any help.   chuck

Answer
Hi Charles,

The common causes for this problem is one or more of the following: (not in any paticular order)

1) Loose battery connection
2) Weak or defective battery
3) Worn starter motor brushes
4) Starter motor clutch worn or defective
5) Worn or defective starter solenoid
