Motorcycle Repair: evolution 5 speed trans problem, kicker, tranny

I have an 88 softail that I picked up recently. its the origianl 5 speed but it has a kicker conversion. When the tranny is cold it shifts fine. when it warms up 3rd and 4th gear get sloppy. what I have to do is move the shifter before getting ready to shift into 3rd or 4th gear then I feel the play go away. so I dont miss a shift. what is causing this.

There are several things that can cause this. A weak or broken shifter spring, worn or damaged shifter drum or a bad shifter dog.
To check all the above the top cover would have to be removed and the above items checked.
