Motorcycle Repair: clutch adjustment, harley davidson repair, clutch adjustment

Question
What is the correct procedure for adjusting the clutch on a 79 ironhead sporty.  I ahve the Harley Davidson repair manual for the bike, and I have followed the directions it it a dozen times to no result, I am currently dragging when I put it in gear, and slipping above 2000 rpms in all 4 gears when riding

Answer
With your problem, I would check the clutch plates to make sure the clutches are not wore out. You will have to remove the primary cover to do that.
To adjust the clutches: remove the cover and loosen the locknut. Go to the cable and loosen the locknut. Turn the cable inward to make the cable shorter or so you have alot of play in the clutch lever. Now turn the adjuster screw in the primary inward slowly just until it touches. Back it out around 1/8 of a turn. Tighten the locknut. Now go to the cable and turn the adjuster outward, to lengthen the cable. What you want is about 1/8 inch play in the clutch lever. Tighten the locknut.
Good luck and happy riding
