Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 850 Special missing second gear, bikebandit com, shively

Hi Mark,

I just bought a 1980 Yamaha 850 and the previous owner says it's missing second gear. He added that you can shift right through to third and that the bike runs well.

What will it take for me to fix this and is it something I can take on myself (with the help of a Clymer manual).

Hi Todd,

Borrow or purchase the service manual and review the procedures. Decide if you can handle the task.

The work is a bit involved and may require the purchase of special tools.
