Motorcycle Repair: nightawk rattle, nighthawk 650, high pitch

Question
I recently bought a 1984 nighthawk 650. lets not kid ourselves, the bike is a good beater and I bought it because it was cheap. The last owner had it for this year only and rode it 4-5 times in this season.Replacing battery, spark pluks and oil.
But everything works, except for one thing.

it as a distinct RATTLE when hitting the 2 to 3 rpm regardless if im riding in any gear or just in neutral, giving her gas when stopped.once pass the 3000 rpms the rattle dissapears.
the sound of the rattle: isn t lound but heard and sounds like a loose pieces of metal hitting around the engine. like a loose muffler on a car, a bit high pitch. As if as the bikes sounds like a dirt bike for just a bref instant. i ve looked around to see if anything is loose ..nothing.
everything works fine, engine is very responsive but not shure if it serious or needed attention.

can you help me? have any clue.
new to the game of bikes.
sincerely,

Answer
Hi Denis.
Unfortunately, based on your description of the noise, it could be anywhere in the engine area on the bike.  It could be a loose part externally, under the engine, a mis-adjusted or out of adjustment tune-up detail or even a loose part in the engine itself.  Get the repair manual for the bike, as it will be the best investment that you will ever make for that bike.

The only way to know if the rattle is something to worry about or not, is to go through the bike and make sure that everything is tightened up and adjusted properly (tighten the exhaust system in particular).  Do a complete tune-up on the bike, including valve adjustment and carb synchronization.

If after all of that there is still a rattle, then get it to a mechanic and have hime check it out.

Good luck.
