Motorcycle Repair: coughing carb, triumph bonneville, carbs

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 1967 Triumph Bonneville with a 650 and two Amal carbs.  Recently, it has developed a problem when the engine warms up.  The carb on the left side starts to pop and cough, and the motor wants to die out.  I have to keep the revs up high to get home.
Any ideas why this is happening?
thanks!

Answer
Hi Brian.
When was the last time you synchronized the carbs?  How about the timing and valves?

If any of those are off, then the engine will have problems.  There is also the possibility of a short in the ignition wiring or a failing coil.

Get yourself a manual for the bike and check all of those things.  Most likely, the synchro is overdue and the valves are no longer within specs.

Good luck.
