Motorcycle Repair: 2000 TT 600, triumph thunderbird sport, adjustment screws

Question
John thank you in advance for your assistance.
I have just bought a 2000 TT 600 the chain seems to be very loose I have not worked on a bike in over 15 years and should probably ask before taking any steeps forward. I awsume that the process would be loosening the Main hub nut then adjusting the adjustment screws? How tight or how much play should the chain have?

You know, it's funny, but I can't find my owners manual for my '99 Triumph Thunderbird Sport.  If I could I would be able to answer your question with a little better certainty.

But a general rule of thumb is that around 3/4 inch play is about right for most bikes. Also, when you check the chain, try pulling it away from the back side of the sprocket. If you can see daylight under a link when you do this, the chain is worn and stretched, putting all the bike's power on one roller and sprocket tooth at a time instead of distributing it around the sprocket. It needs replacement.

You can perform the adjustment by loosening up the hub and carefully turning the screws on both sides the same number of turns in the same direction. This will maintain the alignment. However, you should check the alignment afterwards. If you are unable or ill-equipped to do this by all means have a bike shop do it for you. Alignment has a huge effect on the handling and must be right.
