Motorcycle Repair: Idle setting, triumph bonnie, clutch adjustment

Question
Chris:
I just purchased a 2001 Triumph Bonnie 790 Twin that is still not quite broken in ( 360 miles!) and  would like to know if resetting the idle speed is a DYI or if I need to take it to a shop. After it warms up, the idle speed just seems too high, and I think it may be part of ther problem with ther clutch grabbing--the Brit idiosyncrasy of grinding into first gear. The upshifts also tend to "clunk rather than "snick" as they should and I think its the idle speed that's contributing to this problem. The clutch adjustment seems OK. So, even if there wasn't a problem with the grabbing, the engine speed, after warm-up just seems too high. This model has no tach so I don't know how fast it is running, but it just seems too fast. Can you help me, please? I'm not a mechanic but I love to tinker and will try just about anything if I have a little guidance from an expert. Thanks, Bill

Answer
Hi Bill.
Resetting the idle speed is definitely one of the many DIY jobs on the bike.

The idle adjustment is made with that little gnurled knob under the carbs.

As far as if it's set too high on your bike, you will need to use a portable tach and the repair manual.

If the idle speed is the same as it was when you got the bike, then don't change it.  It was set at the manufacturer and is correct.

Double-check in the manual or with the dealership if you have any questions concerning the original settings.

Good luck.
