Motorcycle Repair: timing an evo with points ignition, timing hole, pinion shaft

Question
Hi Mike,
My problem is this. I have a 1987 evo softail which has been converted to points ignition. My manual only covers electronic ignitions. Can you provide me a step by step process on setting the timing on my bike. The bike has been running points for a few years now and I've decided to give it a birthday present with a tune-up. I'm running spilt-fire plugs, standard coil for points.I have searched the web with no real success.

Answer
Your timing on your bike would be the same as the electronic. One thing to remember, once the timing is set, it doesnt change. Your timing is a direct drive off the cam and the cam is direct drive off the pinion shaft. SO once its set, it is set.
Now to the timing.
In order to set the timing you will need a timing light and a clear timing hole plug. Without the timing hole plug you will get a oil spray out of the timing plug when the motor is running. First remove the timing hole plug located on the left side of the bike. Install the clear timing hole plug. Start the bike and let it warm up.Connect the timing light. Now looking through the timing hole plug locate the timing mark. If you are off then remove the timing cover and rotate the timing plate to make the timing mark centered. Put everything back together and your set to go.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
