Thanks for the response, I put in a new air filter and seems to be doing better. Do you know how many miles would be high miles for a bike, my is a 2001 Honda shadow ace with 20000. Any thought on maintance needs. I have been think that the chain and sprockets need to be replaced. The chain seem to slap a lot, even if I adjust it the way the book say, any thoughts?

thanks
David

Hi David.
The oil in the air filter box does not come from the carb, but from the breather line that goes from the crankcase to the airbox.

Is you air filter due for replacement?  If it is clogged up, then it could cause this as well as blowby from the cylinders into the crankcase.

Without knowing anything else about the bike or the problem and any other symptoms, I couldn't really tell you much more.

Check your valve timing and carb synchronization as well as the air filter and let me kno what yu have for symptoms.  We can proceed from there if need be.

Good luck.

Answer
Hi David.
Both the owner's manual and the repair manual have the maintainence schedules in them.

As far as the chain and sprockets, the chain should be check/adjusted and maintained about once a week if you ride every day, like I do or twice a month if you use the bike only on weekends and such.

If there is more that 1 to 1 1/2 inches after maximum adjustment, then it needs to be replaced.  When the chain is replaced, the sprockets need to be replaced as well.  This creates even wear to both chain and sprockets.

They should be changed about 2 times a year or when the chain has stretched to maximum length.

Ride safe.
