Motorcycle Repair: Hard Starting Honda CX500, honda cx500 custom, 1979 honda cx500

Question
Greetings!
I have a 1979 Honda CX500 Custom, 11,000 miles.
The bike started and ran fine; however, I noticed after a while, it would not start when the engine was hot, but when it did finally start, it ran fine.  Now it does not want to start at all.  The engine seems to be flooding itself.  I pulled the plugs and they are wet with fuel.  I have a spark but an experienced motorcycle rider said that the rectifer may not be putting out a hot enough spark to start the engine.  Have you come across this before?  Also, I am from Cleveland, Ohio.  How can I find a reputable Honda repair shop that works on these older bikes in my area?
Thanks,
David

Answer
Hi David,

I'm a Cleveland Browns fan from Dayton, Ohio. Yeah!

The rectifier converts AC electric from the altenator to DC electric to charge the battery and supply power for lighting. It's not part of the ignition circuit and would not cause such problem.

Ignition module (CDI), ignition coils, and ignition pick-up coil are all ignition parts that effect spark.

I suspect the problem lies within the carburetors, especially if the MC was stored over the winter. A good indication of this is the engine starts and idles with choke, but stalls without choke; the engine is difficult to start when hot; more choke is needed to start when coold, and there are more.

Does this describe what you experienced? Reply by my email if you like.
