Motorcycle Repair: Wont start, cylinder compression, valve clearances

Question
Mark, I have a 1994 honda cbr900rr. I bought the bike after it had been sitting up for about 1year and a half. I have been riding it ever since I bought it with minor problems of course. I now have a problem with getting the bike to start. I have gotten the battery charged so I can rule that out but now i dont know what to do next to key in to the problem. I tried to push start it and the bike sounded like it was going to start. I need some advice and hopefully you can help. Thank you.

Answer
Hi DJ,

If the MC was stored awhile, I suspect the gas in the carbs has varnished. This requires a thorough carb cleaning. The carbs are removed, disassembled, cleaned, and reinstalled. Carb synchronization is performed to fine tune the carbs.

There may other problems, too. I would check altenator output, cylinder compression, and valve clearances. Basically a tune-up after compression was determined to be within specs.
