Motorcycle Repair: rusty fuel tank, honda cx 500, 1979 honda cx 500

I recently had the fuel tank on my 1979 Honda Cx 500 painted.  The painter for some reason put water in the tank and now there are pits of rust and discoloring in the tank.  How do I clean the tank and solve this problem?  The tank was perfect before painting.

Hi Jim.
 The easiest way to fix it is to just reseal the tank.  That should inhibit the rust and prevent any further intrusion in the tank.

The whole process shouldn't take any more than 24 hours from start to finish.  Almost all of that will be waiting for the sealant to dry.
