Motorcycle Repair: shovelhead rebullt, kb pistons, kehin

Question
1982 shovelhead. 80 ci i just had the engine rebuilt (lower end done, heads port and flowed, new valves cyl 10 over.  I put in kb pistons 8-1.    I put in crane lifters , andrews cam 1 or a (the low compression one).  adjustable pushrods. the ignition is a compufire elite single fire, crane single fire coil.  The carb is a kehin screaming eagle.  the pipes look like cycle shacks. I had the heads port and flowed.  the bike ran fine before I took it apart

now the bike pops  backfires.and only runs when the enrichner is on.

I think I am not adjusting the pushrods correctly.
and maybe the carb is now to lean, and kb pistons said in the manual that I might have to retard the ignition.  I managed to get 2 miles on the engine so far.  coasted home.

thanks
Mike

Answer
First, go back and redue the pushrods. Make sure they are bled down before adjusting them. If they are to tight you will have the problem youa re describing.
If that doesnt solve the problem the I would check the carb. You never said it was jetted or not for what you did to the bike and if it wasnt then it is probably to lean.
If the above doesnt solve the problem then I would check the cam to make sure youa re not off a tooth.
Let me know what you find
Mike
