Motorcycle Repair: small gas leak., petcock, gas leak

Question
HELLO, THIS MAY BE AN EASY QUESTION FOR YOU (I HOPE. I HAVE A YAMAHA VIRGO,89. MY PEP COT IS LEAKING GAS NOT MUST BUT ITS VERY NOTIONABLE. NOW IS THERE A GASKET OR SOMTHING THAT I CAN DO TO MAKE IT STOP THE LEAK.

Answer
Wes,
Possibly.  First, be sure where the fuel is exactly leaking from around the "Petcock".  If it is leaking from the hose itself you may need to just replace the hose with a new length so it is tight to the petcock's nipple.  If it is leaking from the valve itself you will need to replace the petcock itself.  If it is leaking from the very top, the exposed edge of the gasket between the petcock and tank and is wet with fuel you will need to replace that gasket.  You would simply need to remove the petcock by loostening the 2 screws and carefully remove and possibly scrape the gasket from the tank surface and petcock flange.  The petcock is aluminum and you can gouge it with a steel scraper if you are not carefull.  Reintall the petcock w/ the new gasket and apply "Threebond" non-hardening sealant on the threads of the screws.

Hope this helps,
Mike
