Motorcycle Repair: Hot & Cold Twins, honda cl350, air fuel mixture

Question
My 1972 Honda CL350 is a twin.  1 side runs cool and one side runs super hot.  What causes that?

Answer
Chris... one side isn't firing and the other is trying to pull the rest of it along alone.

Engines need compression, spark (at the right time), correct air/fuel mixture and air to run properly.

Suggest: Adjust valves, check compression.. should be about 150-175 psi each side.

Remove point plate, check spark advancer for proper operation, replace point plate, clean point faces thoroughly with point file and contact cleaner. Lubricate the felt wick with a drop of motor oil. Set points to .012-.014" maximum gap (high point on the point cam), then move point plate until the points just open at the F and LF marks alignment on the rotor. Start engine and observe points opening and closing. Any excessive arcing on one set indicates that the condenser for that set of points is either has a loose connection or it has failed. Repair as necessary.
Check spark plug caps with VOM for resistance around 5k ohms. Install new plugs and start engine. If it runs on both sides then you are well on your way. If you have spark and no fuel then you will need to check carbs for contamination in the float bowls, incorrect float levels, bad O-rings and damaged top diaphragms.
If none of this makes sense to you, then take it to a shop who can do basic compression test and tuneup.
