Motorcycle Repair: Spark, plug caps, resistance values

Question
Hi Bill, I found a 74 cb360 Honda only 1352 miles. Cleaned carbs and had it running pretty good. Left the ignition on for several days. Recharged battery and had no spark. No spark at points. Filed and cleaned points and got spark at points. Plugs arc about 1/4 to engine, but when grounded to engine have no spark at plug electrode.
Thx Ron

Answer
Ron, you could have damaged the primary windings of the coil by leaving the switch on so long. Check the resistance values of both coils from battery input leads to the point leads and see if they are close. The one that had all the current going through it (points closed) is the one most effected.
Try a new plug when checking spark and be sure to use a fully charged battery.
Spark plug caps have resistors in them, too, so check for matching resistance values between 5-10k ohms. Be sure that the point faces are clean and shiny and flat. Set gap to .012-.014" at maximum point on point cam lobe and then set the point plates so that the points open at the F and LF marks.
If you can get it running, watch the points and see if you have excessive arcing across one set. If so, the condenser is bad or the leads are loose/disconnected.
