AnswerMartin, that is somewhat of an open ended question. All these passages vary as to their location, size and method of design.
In general, the most effective way to clean out a cylinder head or set of crankcases is to take them to a machine shop and have them hot tanked in a solution that will strip all of the petroleum based deposits from the surfaces.
Rifle brushes can be employed to clear some line of sight passages, and plenty of compressed air can be used to check each passageway for flow. In extreme cases, you would have to drill out any plugs that were installed to facilitate the passage machining processes and then reinstall new ones again.
Machine shops can plug passage ways and then use measured compressed air to pressure check passages that are under pressure, such as coolant and oil passages.
