just bought yamaha maxim and after running it a few minutes the oil light came on and the bike shut down , how much oil does the bike hold and what weight and type? thanks for any help you can give.

The precise answers to that and other questions are in both the owner's manual and the repair manual.  Both can be purchased online and through the dealership.

However, generally speaking, motorcycles will need approximately four (4) Qts of oil.  Some bikes use a little more and some bikes use a little less.

Start with that and get the repair manual for the bike.  That will be more use to you than the owner's manual.
