Motorcycle Repair: 1982 yamaha 650 special, stator coils, stator coil

Question
Hi Chris,
Got a 1982 650 special with 2 problems
1. No fire to the plugs, coil tests OK - an electronic ingnition module?
I have an old manual, but it doesn't help much with this problem.
2. Charging system doesn't charge, have replaced brushes in generator.
Thanks for the help.

Answer
Hi Steve.
Is the manual that you have the owner's manual or the repair manual.  If it's the owner's manual, then get the repair manual.  It will have the wiring diagram; you'll need that.

1)  The coils have checked good, so you know that there is a problem with power getting to them.  That means the wiring and fuse between power and coil.  Check for shorts.  My guess is that you have a few.  Worst case scenario, you will need a new wiring harness.

2)  The charging system problem is most likely caused by the stator coil.  Not the brushes.  Normally, stator coils go long before the brushes do.  Check that.  You will likely find that it is burned out.  Visually, it will look brown or black and may even smell a bit like burned wiring.

Start with those.
Good luck.
