Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Honda Goldwing Carburetor Trouble, honda goldwing, allexpert

Question
Hello Mike,
I know this is a sort of hard question to answer so it's fine if you don't answer it, I get a lot of hard questions myself, being an allexpert too! I have a '80 Goldwing, that has not been on the road since 1986, and although I got it started 2 years ago, it only would run at 2,500 rpm, and it ended up having a small fire in the carburetor air intake! When I finally had the nerve to start it again, gas came out of the carbs and out the mufflers, completey flooding. I took the carbs apart and they were very dirty, I cleaned them but with no change. Do you think it's the inlet needles? A new carb is too expensive, and the rebiuld kits are pretty expensive. I'm thinking of just buying used carbs on Ebay, and putting those on. What do you think? Thanks for any help! Seth

Answer
Hi Seth,

I think you should rebuild the carbs you have. The fuel in those carbs probably has varnished. The needle often stick and cause the hydro-flood you described. I have links to aftermarket carb rebuild kits. They are affordable and decent quality parts. A thorough cleaning and maybe some minor adjusting should bring her back to reliable service.

Change the engine oil and filter soon. If gas came out the exhaust, it's contaminated the oil, too.

Keep the fire extinquisher handy!
