Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Yamaha Maxim Carburetor, mechanical experience, shively

Question
I had never owned or ridden a motorcycle until I bought this used bike a few months ago.  It had been sitting in the previous owner's garage, unused, for several months before I bought it.  It was always difficult to start, and after riding it only a few times, it now won't start at all.  The engine sounds like it's trying to turn over, but it won't catch.  I've been told that by riding it those few times with old gas in it, I've gummed up the carburetor.
I would like to clean it myself, but don't have any mechanical experience.
Is this something I can take on myself?  If I do have to take it in, can I remove the carburetor and just bring that in?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Scott,

Gasoline varnishes (gels) with time. The carbs will need cleaned. Most people can perform the work at home. Average shop fee for carb cleaning is about $280.

If I had your email address as requested, I could have returned repair info files.
