I've removed everything as Clymer's Manual and still unable to remove carbs. The intake manifolds to cylinders are still in place and their bolts are very difficult to access and will be worse for re-installation if it is necessary to remove the manifolds. If so; both?  is there a "trick"?
The purpose is to clean carbs after sitting for 4 yrs with "bad/varnished" gas. Bike will fire on 1 and barely idle with choke fully closed but not on the other :(
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.  (email:  pelorus@shaw.ca )

Hi Gerry.
No, manifold removal is not necessary.  What you need to do while prying the carbs out of the manifolds is to twist the set a bit opposite the direction that the manifolds are.  Similar to the movement of a screw.  Twist and up.  But remember to make sure that they seat completely and properly when you put them back on.

Good luck.

Thank you Chris but I had been able to release them from the manifolds but still unable to get them out. Local Yamaha dealer states manifolds (or one maybe) must be removed :( and the re-installation (of manifolds) will be next to impossible as I see it. Might the removal of one float chamber produce the clearance req'd. (or would this not be a good idea at this point)? I'm mystified as I would've expected Clymer's manual to be quite thorough. Thanx for the prompt initial reply :)

Answer
Hi Gerry.

Well, there is another way to do it, but it requires you to drop the engine down a bit and will be more time-consuming than removing one of the manifolds.  If you decide to drop the engine, then follow the instuctions to the letter.  If you decide to remove a manifold, then find the one that will have the easiest access, and remove that one.

On a side note; While very good, the Clymer's Manuals are still not anywhere near as good as the factory manual.  You may pay a lot more for one, but they are definitely worth it.

Good luck.
