Mike: the fluid is coming out of the piston area.

Hi Mike:

I'm having a problem with my rear brake master cylinder, I changed out the fluid but I can't seem to gain the pedal pressure back.  Also when I'm try to bleed the system a lot of fluid is coming out of the master cylinder and dumping on the ground.  The master cylinder wasn't leaking prior.

Do you have a good method of bleeding?  The Harley manual sucks. Thanks…

When you say the fluid is dumping out of the master cylinder, where is it coming from?

If you have fluid coming out of the piston are then the seal is bad. You can go two different ways for this.
One is the get a rebuild kit for the master cylinder, but sometimes this doesnt solve the problem. Depends on how much scoring and pitting is inside the slide area.
The other is to get a new master cylinder and then you wont have any problems for years.
Good luck and happy riding

Sorry, missed that part. The best method is to get a vacuumn pump and pump the brake fluid through, but you are going to spend alot of money for the pump and not use it very often.
What you need to do is fill the master cylinder with fluid. Have a friend pump the brake several times and hold it down. Crack the bleeder valve open on the brake caliber to let the air and fluid out. You can put a small hose on the valve to catch the fluid and have it go in a cup to stop it from running down the brake caliber. Close the valve and pump the brake several times. Keep doing this until all you get is clear fluid. It will take quit a few times due to the fact that the hole in the master cylinder for the fluid is very small, but keep working at it. Do not let the master cylinder go dry or you will have to start over.
Good luck and happy riding
