Motorcycle Repair: 81 WIDE GLIDE 1200, left turn signal, seat area

Question
-------------------------
Followup To    REPLY------->  NO TACH------SET UP IS LIKE A ''FLH'' ELEC GLIDE--SPLIT TANKS--SPEEDO ONLY--ONCE YOU REMOVE THE DASH COVER THE SPEEDO IS BOLTED TO A PLATE, BOLTED TO THE FRAME---I SEE ONE LARGE FRONT BOLT AND A NUT AROUND THE CHOKE ROD---BOTH REMOVED---BUT PLATE STILL BOLTED DOWN SOMEWHERE.  MY LAST '79 ELEC GLD  CLASSIC HAD A PROBLEM LIKE THIS----WOULD SHUT DOWN ''WHEN-EVER''  WAS A BREAKER PROBLEM LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT AREA---GOT A FEELING THIS COULD BE THE SAME PROBLEM----------MY 81 FXWG WAS THE LAST OF THE 1200'S [1ST HALF OF 1981].  A FRIEND BELIEVES THE PROBLEM IS IN THE WIRING UNDER THAT PLATE WHERE MANY CONNECTIONS COME TOGETHER [PLUG TOGETHER[S]...BUT WILL CHECK OUT YOUR IDEAS.  ONE MORE BIG THANKS.     CLAJR
Question -
TRYING TO REMOVE THE DASH PLATE [DASH BULBS ARE LOCATED THERE] THAT COVERS A CLUSTER OF WIRES THAT ARE BETWEEN THE TANKS.  BIKE HAS ORIG. 15,000 MILES ON IT--HAS DEVELOPED A SHORT I BELIEVE THAT SHUTS THE BIKE DOWN OR AT TIMES WON'T EVEN MAKE CONTACT TO 'START'.  I I REMOVED THE MAIN TOP BOLT AND THE NUT THAT HOLDS THE CHOKE ROD IN PLACE, BUT IT STILL WON'T MOVE.  I KNOW THAT IF YOU USE THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL----IT WILL ALSO ''KILL'' THE ENGINE.  HAVE TO FIX THESE WIRES.  SO I GUESS MY MAIN QUESTION IS------HOW DO YOU REMOVE THAT BASE PLATE---ANY HELP WILL DO.
PS/  IS IT POSS'BLE THAT THERE IS A RELAY THAT IS SHUTTING DOWN THE BIKE?

ANOTHER BIG THANKS,   CLAJR
Answer -
Are you refering to the base plate that holds the tach and speedo? If you are then there are three bolts that hold it. One at the top of it and two in the center.
Your problem doesnt sound like its under there. If the turn signal kills the motor then its either at he handlebar or at the rear of the bike. What you need to do is start by traceing the wires from the breaker, located under the seat, to the handlebars and then to the lights. You will need a 12 volt test light to do this. I would suggest getting a wiring diagram so you have somthing to follow.
Good luck and happy riding

Answer
Ok. You have a different type than I was thinking of. The base plate you are talking about has three bolts. One is at the top, which I think you have already removed and has two others. Look under the speedo. The speedo will have to be removed to get to them.
