Motorcycle Repair: 1973 Honda XL 250, honda xl 250, alternator windings

Question
I wanted to get my old 1973 Honda 4-stroke engine started again but I might be missing some ignition parts. The engine was taking off the frame and has been sitting in my basement for 12 years. This is where I am. I have the following parts in a box disconnected, ignition coil, spark plug and a small metal component with the words 6V RS217 Japan with three wires connected, Yellow,Black, and Green\White. The points with one wire disconnected are installed on the engine and look clean. I also have the wire harness from the altanator hanging out and not connected to anything. Basically I was wondering what I really need connected to produce the correct spark to the engine without installing it on the frame since my parents threw the frame in the trash a few years ago. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Dave, these bikes have a spread out magneto ignition system.

You need to find the white or black (maybe black/white) wire from the alternator windings and trace it up to where it connects with the condenser and points in a Black/White connector.

The points have to be clean, the spark advancer behind the point plate must move and return properly. Set gap to .012" and move point plate until the points just open on the F mark alignment (compression stroke). The condenser has to be grounded to the engine, but the coil does not. If the condenser is mounted on the coil, then the coil must be grounded to the engine.

The small box is the voltage regulator for the charging system to regulate output to the battery and lights. Not necessary for your application.
