I have a suzuki GN125. Whenever I stop the bike after riding for over 5-10 minutes there is always a loud bang/pop from the exhaust. It does not appear to be affecting the performance of the bike in general. Also the bike takes longer to start after riding than from cold. What is causing these problems and would I be able to resolve them myself?

Hi Andrew.
When did you last do routine maintainence on the bike?

That's a reminder.

That pop that you hear is a backfire.  It has many basic causes, but occurs when the valve (gap and timing) and ignition timing are not correctly set.  This needs to be corrected as it can cause damage to the valves over time.  The adjustment is done during routine, scheduled maintainence.  Your repair manual will have that schedule as well as all of the specs and proceedures to do the work.

If you don't have a repair manual, then get one.  It will tell you almost all that you need to know to do this adjustment and almost any other work that you will ever need to do on the bike.

Good luck.

Falcon,
I have the manufacturers manual for the bike GN125/E but it doesn't cover the repairs you mentioned. I have done some maintenance work on the bike; adjusting chain tension, changing oil, lubrication and checking tyre pressure so I would like to adjust the valve and ignition timing myself. Do I need a repair manual specifically for the GN125/E or any 4 stroke, 1 cylinder repair manual? How can I find out if the transmission is CDI or TCI ignition as I understand these cannot be adjusted as easily ( the manual states the ignition type as
"Electronic Transmission (transistorised) " )?

Answer
Hi Andrew.
All of the maintainence info is in the manual.  There should be a section marked "Periodic Inspections and Adjustments".  That section will have all of your adjustment proceedures and specs right in it.  There will also be a section marked "Appendices" which should have all of the specs on the entire bike.

Not all manuals are written in such a way that you can just open the page and see the answer.  Sometimes you have to read through a section or two to find what you want.

Good luck.
