Motorcycle Repair: 83 Honda Shadow vt750, honda shadow vt750, drive sprocket

Question
83 Honda Shadow VT750
Can you repair the external shift mech. without removing engine from frame?
Clymers manual states that the repair can be done with the engine in the frame. What I have dicovered is that the right side case will hit the rear section of frame before clearing the clutch outer housing.
The section describing the outer housing states that if the housing comes out of mesh with the oil pump drive sprocket, the engine will have to be removed from the frame and the right side cover removed to mesh the parts back together.
In short, I can't get the cover off because of the housing and can't get the housing off because I would have to remove the engine to clear the frame.
Any experience with this problem?

Answer
Hi BT,

I think we used to loosen or remove engine mount fasteners and axles to do that fix at Honda. It's beens awhile since having done that paticular repair.

Consider the fix with mounts loosened to allow movement of engine in frame and advise.
