Nissan Repair: 2000 Maxima wont start, turning the key, test light

Question
Hi Calvin,
You have been a great help to me once before so I thought I  would ask another question. Sometimes when you turn the key the starter does nothing. Lights, radio and gauges come on but there is nothing else. I have been turning the key off and on in quick succession and then it will start but that is beginning to take longer. Is it the ignition switch? Key chip? Never seen this problem before. TIA

Answer
Hi Jeff -

This could be several things. If you have a voltmeter or test light available it would be easier to check.

When you turn the key to the start position check power at the starter. The large wire is a constant 12V, but the smaller wire supposed to have 12V when someone is holding the key to start. If there is power, and starter does not turn, replace the starter. If there is no power, then I would replace the ignition switch.

Since you can start the car sometimes, you can rule out the fuses, relays, and fusible link.

Hope this helps -
aloha
