Nissan Repair: defects on my nissan terrano, nissan terrano, volume test

Question
Hie Calvin
My nissan terrano v6 1995 had the intank fuel pump replaced after the original pump packed. Thats when my problem started, engine would cut off at 1/4 tank, when i removed supply pipe and there was no fuel coming out. Removed sender unit, only to find out that there was the fuel was 1/4 fuel. Thats when i noticed that the pump was partially exposed and failing to suck fuel although the main suction pipe was properly connected all the way to the strainer.I noticed that on the pump is a small orifice of which the pump was now sucking air through that orifice.I then blocked that hole and bled the system using the supply pipe and from then  everything is functioning well accept that the vehicle jacks on accellaration. My question is are the jacks being caused by my blocking of the orifice and can the blocking that i did end up damaging my pump?

Answer
Hi Andrew -

Yes, if it what I think you are speaking of, that orifice should not be blocked. It is a vent for the fuel. That is why it is starving on acceleration.

I think the pump was not installed correctly the first time. If you are doing this yourself, ensure that it sits properly on the bracket, and in the saddle at the bottom of the tank (if so eauipped). That way it will keep pumping until the tank is completely empty.

Also, it is a good idea to purchased a dealer approved brand. An aftermarket "look alike" will not give you the lifetime or quality of one that the dealer has. You get what you pay for. Unfortunately I cannot say whether your current pump is damaged without being there. The best thing is to take a pressure and volume test on the pump.

Hope this helps -
