Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan AltimaTransmission problem, 2002 nissan altima, obdii scanner

Question
I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 liter, and I'm experiencing some problems with the trans. First, the check engine light is on. Secondly, when it is in drive, it will take off from start but does not change properly, resulting in high rpms. I was told that it was a 50/50 chance of getting the solenoid replaced, or rebuilding or replacing the trans. I want to hear from an expert

Answer
Paul,

Get the codes read to see what the light is telling you.  Autozone or Checker will check the codes for free.  If there is a specific transmission code you will be looking at a diagnostic from a transmission shop since an OBDII scanner will not read the transmission codes.  I would go to Cottman if you have one locally.  Stay away from the other guy.  Their canned answer is you need a new transmission.  It could be as simple as a transmission fluid change along with a solenoid.  Or, you could have worn clutches and that would mean rebuild.  Can't tell over the computer.
