Nissan Repair: Intense rubbing noise from front left wheel, spindle hub, wheel bearing

Question
Hi mate, I have a question for you with a problem i'm having on my car.  There is an intense rubbing noise coming from my front left wheel, the best way to describe it is if i drive really slowly it sounds like every 3/4 turn it rubs (and sounds like rubber rubbing off something) for the other 1/4, no marks on the tyre, disc, pads and all suspension struts and joints are solid with no play, also there is now no play in the wheel bearing when i rock it.

Here is the puzzling part, when i jack the wheel up and spin it there is no noise!, I have replaced the disc and the pads were only changed last november so they are ok, at the moment i'm thinking it may be the drive shaft, but i'm no expert, thats where you come in :) so to recap

1. Noise is only in it when its on the ground and the weight of the car on the wheel, (also forgot to mention that it seems to get worse when steering wheel is locked right and practically disappears when locked left)

2. New disc, calliper is operating correctly (did a brake test on rolling road - no imbalance detected)

3. No play in any joints or no indication around hub where it is rubbing

I hope i provided enough info for you to help me with this because here in ireland dealer labour rates are extorsion!!

Answer
Vernon,

If the bearing and rotor are fine it is time to look at the constant velocity joint for indications of wear and tightness.  Also, there is a bearing seal protection ring, part of the CV that inserts into the back of the spindle hub, that can ever so slightly rub as it spins.  If you get it disassembled you will see witness marks where it has been rubbing.  It shines the metal...
