Question
QUESTION: I changed the timing chain on my 92 nissan truck.MY silver links line up great.Started truck fired right up.Drove it down the road it sputtered a little when shifting but not all the time.Got back home shut off truck and it would not start back.Got up next morning truck started great and purred like a kitten.Got up next day same thing but when it got hot would not start.Checked firing all is great.Whats NEXT?

ANSWER: Tommy,

I would look at the timing chain marks to make sure it is not off a tooth.  Also, check the distributor and timing marks.  Make sure it is dead on.  Sounds like the timing is too far advanced.

QUESTION: Are you talking about twisting the distributor if so I have tried that.

ANSWER: Tommy,

Yes, I am saying I would check the base timing and the static timing.  BOth the chain should be checked for valve event and the distributor should be checked to make sure it is on the mark.   Remember, it can be 180 degrees out and you would only know if you check to make sure the spark occurs at the proper time.

QUESTION: How do I check to see if the spark occurs at proper time?

Answer
Tommy,

Pull number one plug.  Remove the fuse for the coils.  Have someone bump the engine over and when you get air blowing on your finger at the number one hold have them stop.  This is close to number one.  Get a prybar and a socket and move it to top dead center.  Now, remove the cap and note the rotor position.  This is number one.  If all lines up you are there.  My guess is it is 180 degrees out and that means either moving the wires around or reinserting the distributor.
