Nissan Repair: AC Servicing, 2005 nissan sentra, freon gas

Question
QUESTION: I have 2005 Nissan Sentra, and when I went for oil change the guy told me that I should go for AC servicing also or it will stop functioning and will cost too much to repair. Do I need to go for this AC servicing after every 5 years.

ANSWER: Hi Rajendra -

I am not sure what your question is, however if it is to verify what you are told, I will need the year make and model of your Nissan. Generally speaking, I do not usually recommend A/C servicing unless something is wrong with the system.

QUESTION: Thanks for reply. Yes I wanted to verify whether it is required to go for AC servicing after every 5 years?

The mechanic told me that compressor (or some) gas was very low and if not serviced AC will be damaged and will cost more money. I was at Volvoline to get oil change. He told me that ac servicing will cost $120 to $130

Details of Nissan are:
Year: 2005
Model: Sentra (1.8)

Thanks

Answer
Hi Rajendra -

Normally if the freon gas is low in the system, 2 things happen:

The compressor short cycles (meaning that you hear it clicking on and off constantly)
The compressor does not work at all even if the switch is on (this means that the pressure switch has shut the compressor off due to insufficient freon in the system, this is to protect from compressor damage)

I do not know how your mechanic determined that the freon gas is low besides the above, and I doubt if he put gauges on it as you did not ask him to.

So, with that said, if none of the above is hapopening, then i would just leave it as is if it is working properly.
