Nissan Repair: transmission, nissan d22, engine oil pressure

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 2wd 1998 nissan 2.4 lt ute. when the car is in neutral there is a rough rumble sound coming from the tranny. when the clutch is depressed the sound is gone i know its a bearing but what one and what parts should i get and if is this doing any damage if left for a few weeks (still driving) until i can afford to fix it.

Thanks mate.

ANSWER: Jay,

The input shaft bearing is failing.  Probably due to spalling.  The front bearing is not oiled at start-up.  Unlike transmissions of the past there is not splash oiling.  So, the vehicle has to be moving to get the juices flowing.  So, when you replace the front input shaft bearing be sure not to idle the transmission dry by starting the vehicle to warm it up.  Start it and go after you have engine oil pressure.  It is a pretty simple process once you get the transmission out of the vehicle.  If you want to wait chang eto Mobil1 5W30 synthetic oil to reduce the noise and make it last.

QUESTION: Hi Von, do you know if the nissan D22 ute 1999 model has unboltable throw out shaft or does it go throuht the gear box i believe that is my problem

Answer
Jay,

The throw out bearing and clutch release would make noise if you pressed it.  Since it is quiet when you press in the clutch leads me to the input shaft bearing.  The throw out bearing and release area easy to remove once the transmission is removed.
