Nissan Repair: timing belt replacement, nissan xterra, timing belt replacement

Question
Hi Calvin - I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra (4WD) with approx 120K miles.  I have been told that the timing belt needs to be replaced, and that I should also have the water pump and thermostat replaced simultaneously.  I think they mentioned a couple gaskets that would be replaced as well.  Can you tell me approx. what I should be looking for as far as cost for all this work?  I've heard anywhere from $500 up to $850.  Thank you for your time.

Tara

Answer
Hi Tara -

you are correct. Timing belts should be replaced every 100K miles on automatics, and about 60K miles on standard shift vehicles. The belt does run the water pump, and replacing the pump is also a good practice.

I wish you could bring the car to me as I would charge you only $300 to replace, but the $500 to $600 figure is a good deal outside.

Ensure you find a competent mechanic for your job OK?

Hope this helps -
