ANSWER: Hello Rod -

have you tried checking the transmission mount? A lot of times when it is worn out, the trans touches the farme of the vehicle and you hear(and feel) everything.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: thanks for reply, however I've tried checking mounts by
putting engine in gear forward and reverse while holding
on brake and with the hood up a mechanic checking mounts
...no movement
what I'm trying to find out is what controls the shift,..
speedo works fine but is there another sensor which is
causing problem.....even going from park to drive at idle
is a loud clunk..otherwise van drives perfect
...no slipping or vibration.

thanks in advance for any help

Answer
Hi Rod -

That method is to check the motor mounts, not the transmission mounts. The fact that merely shifting from park to drive produces that clunk tells me that the trans mount is worn.

Try this test -
Get a floor jack and lift the engine at the transmission about one inch. Then shift from park to drive. If the clunk is less noticeable or goes away completely, then replace the trans mount.

Hope this helps -
