why would a pathfinder not have spark to the coil

Check the ignition fuse first.  But, most of the time the distributor is contaminated with oil on the optical shutter wheel.  Disassemble the distributor and look for oil on the optical shutter wheel and the pickup and receiver and if this is the case replace the distributor with a rebuilt unit.
