Nissan Repair: Windshield wiper arm not working, windshield wiper arm, plastic bushings

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1995 Nissan Altima and the drives side windshield wiper arm stopped working. The passenger side works fine. Will replacing the arm fix this problem, or is more/less complex?  Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Greg -

The linkage of the wipers is held together by plastic bushings at each joint. This is what broke (on the driver's side) and needs to be replaced. Access is quite limited, so you have to be patient and able to work through a small area. It is accessed by removing the plastic cowl near the wipers (open the hood and you will see it right below the wipers). Stick your hand in and find the joint that had separated, remove the plastic bushing. Place the new bushing on the female side of the linkage first, and then press on the other side. You might have to get a plier in there to do this.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your help!  Does the wiper arm need to be completed removed to make this repair? I was able to remove the cap and nut, but the arm will not come off of the bolt, based on what I am looking at it appears the bushing is under the wiper arm....is this correct?

Answer
Hi Greg -

Yes. The wiper arm need not be removed. The bushing is under the arm. Hopefully you will have enough clearance. The important part to remember is that you have to put on the male side of the bushing into the female side of the arm first, and then snap it in, perhaps using a plier. If you try to do it the other way, it will be a lot more difficult. Also, apply some grease on the bushing, it helps.
