Nissan Repair: Nissan E15 Series Engines., nissan e15, crankshaft pulley

Question
I am in the process of rebuilding an1984 E15 Nissan 1500cc engine, but I am unsure of the position of where the correct timing marks on the cam flywheel in relation to the V notch in the crankshaft pulley should be, and also I would like to know what the correct Valve tappet clearances for inlet and exhaust should be, if they are available.
The 1986 Nissan Sunny SGX I believe also has the same specifications as the model on which I am working, So I could use those specs as a guide if we can't source the others.

Answer
John,

I do not personally know the engine you speak of.  I looked for the information on the settings.  But, you should have a single overhead cam engine since it is a 1984.  Set the cam gear to where the dot/point is straight up.  Look at the back of the cover and there should be a groove to line it up with.  On the crank there is a dot to line up straight up with an arrow.  If yours does not have the crank one you have to put the timing cover on and line the crank up to number one.  Then, remove the cover and look at the cam gear again.  Once you have everything lined up and the tension on the belt you rotate the assembly two times and stop back on top dead center.  Check the alignment marks and if it is on you are good to assemble.  Use .011 inch lash on the valve tappet adjustment for both intake and exhaust and be sure engine is warm for the final adjustment.  Here is a cool link for information on Nissan.
