Nissan Repair: 2001 Xterra Transmission, nissan xterra, internal sensors

Question
I have a 4wd, 6cyl, 2001 Nissan Xterra.  A few days ago, the following began.  When I drive, it shifts hard into 2nd gear then won't shift into 3rd.  The engine revs but it doesn't shift again.  The "overdrive" light blinks and the "service engine soon" light stays on.  We've had it at two different shops.  They have ruled out the following: 1. Low or burnt fluid 2. Faulty internal sensors or solenoids 3. Bad Transmission, they've gone through the tranny and it seems fine.  I'm told that they now need to check the computer and external sensors.  I appreciate any ideas you have.

Answer
Clay,

I would think the valve body or transmission computer is not working properly.  With the overdrive flashing and the check engine light on there should be codes.  Have a shop with a comsult II scantool read the computer and that should narrow things down.  A shop that specializes in Nissan vehicles or the dealer to read the codes first.
