Nissan Repair: random not starting problem, using jumper cables, engine cranks

Question
1996 Nissan Altima GXE -- now and then the car will not start after it has used several times during the day. Engine runs fine, no check engine light before that. The engine cranks weakly on trying to restart. Using jumper cables gets it going again fine. Alternator problem? Loose battery cables? Other ideas?

Answer
Hi Michael -

High probablility that it could be the alternator - good call on your part. Loose cables, yes, too. You might want to also look at a faulty starter, however, if the jump is good, probably not.

Please do this test - take a voltmeter and test the battery. Should read at least 12 volts. Start the engine and note battery voltage - should be 14 volts. Turn on the headlights at high beam, you also should get about 14 volts, revving the engine should also get it there. Anything less than that, the alternator is defective.

Hope this helps -
