Nissan Repair: 1991 nissan se v6 pickup, battery cables, bendix

when i turn the key to start the engine it won crank the first time.when i do it again it cranks.today i went to crank it,it wouldnt crank at all.now i can hear the starter turning but im not sure if it is turning the flywheel.why do you think it wont start?

The starter has a bendix that throws the starter gear into the flywheel.  If this sticks the starter will only spin.  You can remove the starter and using battery cables you can test it.  If the gear does not extend replace the starter or get a new drive bendix.
