Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R, crank angle sensor, crank sensor

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2002 SE-R with 73000 miles, the Tach intermittently stops and the car stalls, after restarting it runs with an engine code but still no tach. The codes read engine speed sensor and crank position sensor. I can get the crank sensor but not the speed sensor, I was wondering if this is a comon problem, and if the crank sensor is the usual fix? Or if I need to take it to the dealer and let them deal with it :(
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really don't want to go to the dealer. Thanks, Jeremy

ANSWER: Jeremy,

You should be able to get both sensors.  The crank angle sensor is easy as it the speed sensor.  Check with the dealer or go to courtesynissan.com and click on their parts section.  I like them because they sell for jobber and not list and it gets mailed to your home.  No repeat trips to the dealership.  Then disconnect the battery for a few minutes to clear the codes.

QUESTION: Thank You, But do you know if this is a common problem, and do these parts usually fix it? I don't want to throw parts at it and still end up taking it in.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Answer
Jeremy,

Yes the replacement of these parts usually corrects the problem.  Now, if you want to be sure in what needs to be replaced you could perform a check of the harness and plug too to make sure your harness has not been damaged.  If the car has been wrecked before or a rodent has got to some of the wiring under the hood are other things that can screw up a sensor circuit.  So, check the connectors and harness before you replace the parts.
