Nissan Repair: 4x4 question, automatic locking hubs, sun visor

Question
I just bought a 1990 nissan 4x4 hardbody , the fella said the 4x4 gear
works, when i pulled the 4x4 stick down to 4 L the light went on. I tried
to put it up to 2h and 4h but the light didn't go on , what does that
mean

Answer
John,

Check the sun visor as it has instructions on how the system works.  From my experience you shift to 4 low and the system will go into 4 low after you drive a bit.  If the hubs are self locking you should have to do nothing outside the vehicle.  Check the front wheels to see if there is a dial that turns to lock.  If not, then you have automatic locking hubs.  Now, check the visor to see the procedure for getting 4 high and 2 high to apply.  From memory you have to be stopped to shift, since you have a stick.  Check it out and email me back.  The light gives you an indication of what is going on.  If you drive and feel the 4 wheel drive kick in on high you know it is working and the switch or bulb is blown.  Most likely it will be the switch since the light lasts for years.
